Description
I've received a couple of E-mails asking, "What happened to you?" When the third one hit, I decided, "I guess I should tell my Rendo Friends, what happened."
Oh, bout 4 years ago, I came across a 1966 Ford Ranchero basking under some trees. Went in (had to go up the road a piece) and (cough) inquire about it. Turned out, the "original" owner passed away, his daughter inherited it, and a couple of years before I saw it they parked it under the trees "temporarily" to make room in their barn for another truck. Temporary turned into two years.
It was all there 'cept the air conditioner, and bits and pieces of the floor. BUT! Mostly intact and fixable. Shucks! I can fix it. PFHT! Yeah!
Research confirmed I was the second "legal" owner. So, I grabbed a friend of mine (oversize bar [he has big ears]) and we went up to get it. Research also proved this was a very rare Ranchero as it was the only year they had this body style (Falcon front end with Fairlane back end). It was PERFECT for my wife who is wheelchair bound to transfer from chair to vehicle and back and she can go parts huntin'...uh straw for flower beds (yes, dear) with me.
Fast forward a couple to three years. I piddled with it, while doing my "real work." My 3D stuff went yon and tither..piddled with it too.. Then my spouse, remember her? Well, she said, (during a tornado), "If THAT wasn't in the garage, your car could be protected, somewhat." Hmmm, I get the point. She's tired of lookin' at it just sitting. That, was last month.
In the last month, I got it cranked and running (much to the chagrin of Alice (my garage kitty), fenders for the crunch the fellow above with the BIG block (He be ugly) wrecked the right front fender 10 years ago (grandson of former owner); and bought a bunch of NEW parts to put on in place of the rusted parts.
Last week, as I said, I got it to run but the fuel filter was blocked so if I could find someone to sit on the carb while I drive and pour gas into it, it was fine. I couldn't get any volunteers, so I went to a parts store and got a new filter. It now runs without having to prime it. HOWEVER! When I finally got it going, it blew thousands of acorns, nuts and a big grey furry thing out of the right exhaust (all the way from my garage to the street [25 feet]). If nothing else, I have a good tater chunker! No worries ladies, the gray furry thing turned out to be fiberglass from the "glass packs" the el-son-in-law put on (not mine, the other owner). Whew! My wife thought it was a squirrel too that lost more than his nuts. Left exhaust blew chunks straight down. Last night, I put the filter on, cranked it a few times and it belched again, a bit of rust and MORE fiber(fur) along with a loud POPs (backfire) every few seconds. It was nearing 8 PM and to be "nice" to my neighbors (and to keep the police from showing up for someone firing a gun in the neighborhood), I shut it down for the night and went lookin' for Alice. At the first backfire, she went across the street and three houses down and sat to watch the show.
But, that's what I've been up to. Rumors of my demise may be premature as I still haven't tackled the lack of brakes on the thing. That's this coming month. Our Pastor begged me not to drive it to church until then, they have no trees for me to hit and use as brakes like I did with my 50 Chevy Fleetline Deluxe, I spared the outhouse. Would've been a mess if Ol' Miss McCoy was in it when I needed to stop. But no worries, YET. I may post some other pics as it "grows" into the family. I ain't gone...YET.
