Description
A step back in time: Years ago, this used to be a fairly common sight in English rural areas.
Stubble burning was the deliberate setting fire of the straw stubble that remained after wheat and other grains had been harvested but has been effectively prohibited since 1993 in England and Wales, though is still practised in some countries.
The upside of this practice is that it quickly clears the field and is cheap, it kills weeds, including those resistant to herbicide and it kills slugs and other pests.
The downside is loss of nutrients, pollution from smoke, damage to electrical and electronic equipment from floating threads of conducting waste and risk of fires spreading out of control.
It does, however, make dramatic photographs. :-)
The postwork was to add a canvas texture to hide the grain of the original photo and to add a frame - I thought it looked better as an artwork. :-)
