Description
in observance of the thousands of Allied forces that stormed upon and above the beaches of Normandy on that fateful day.
I found this photo of the Douglas C-47, captured 10/24/10, at the beautiful Armed Forces Reserve Center in beautiful Los Alamitos, California, and which may or may not have carried paratroopers during the invasion, appropriate in homage of that memorable event,
Bye.

Remember it like it was yesterday:) Well, probably not since I was only about 3 1/2 70 years ago. But hats off to you Harry for reminding us all. Nice shot of this grand old D-Day Doll.

I read, in history, about paratrooper-drops behind the lines of the invasion, but I never knew if they'd dropped troops into the invasion itself. There's much I have to learn. In any case, seeing this plane in context of D-Day is awe inspiring. Because here it just sits, still, quiet, surrounded by all that space, so tranquil. In the war, it would've been taken in the face of abject terror. (It does say "D-Day Doll" on it---thus Bill's comment.) A simple and elegant reminder of one of the most harrowing days in western history, though every battle must be harrowing. When I read about D-Day, I couldn't imagine what soldiers faced as they plowed into the Germans' enormous offense. I didn't know it was 70 years now, I never stopped to think. But, coming from a veteran of that war, this commemoration from you is extremely potent and appreciated, and I thank you for posting it. (I saw it when it went up, just didn't comment then.) The pic is clear, balanced, and noble; and your usual deftness at composing plane or car shots is fully present here. Again Harry, a bow to all of you who went through this, for the countless others who didn't. A deeply appreciated tribute.
