Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper!
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

LOL! A terrific title for this shot. :) I like the way it shows off the variety in the term "bugs." I wonder if that larva knows how stunning it will be when it's all grown up?

Superb capture Andrea. God bless.

I like the "encounter" photo and title. The leaf destruction on the FlickR version is horrendous but lots of beautiful shapes and patterns.

Perfect title.

Great find and capture! They do turn into pretty bugs!

Cool macro of the curious fly and the latent larva, which will ultimately evolve into a handsome black beetle, which will decimate any leaves that it encounters.

I guess the fly never read "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". The proper question is "Who are you?" But its a fly and what do hey know. I suppose it helps to live in a target rich environment but you have the most amazing serendipity. I notice they always leave behind the leaf veins. Don't they know the veins have more fiber? Two really superb captures.

I think the lava is much more interesting than the beetle :)

Great discovery and a fantastic capture of these bugs, I have seen these, the beetles really catch the eye on sunny days.

Cool shots!

Japanese beetles do the same thing to leaves here, they turn them into lace. wonderful capture, really like the lace leaf the first link takes us to.

Amazing what was left of that leaf, like lace, as Rita says. And you can see the process beginning, here. And those are amazing ceramic-looking shots, too (the other flickr shots): They look like they're glazed. (Why weren't we made with large reflective surfaces? Or incandescence?) I love the confrontation in this shot, the two insects seem totally poised and still, not bothered by each other, just one of them very curious. Love the title, and I assume you can't get line-ups like this very often, with two insects facing off on the perpendicular. A wonderful meeting of species.
