Description
Yup, a jumping spider. Salticidae Phidippus Audax, to be a bit more precise. Jumping spiders are our friends believe it or not. They are very active hunters, have wonderfully acute vision, see in color and in bands we can't see at all. And, they are smart. They recognize us for creatures. They show outright curiosity about us, and if we don't hurt them, they will explore us, play with us and even occasionally accept food gifts from us. One more thing, their venom is NOT human active! That's great cause they have HUGE fangs for their size. Yes you can see this ones fangs curving under their chelicerae. Fang guards. This particular spiders body is about 3/4 inch long. Big for a Salticidae.

I saw two lovely jumping spiders today; three minutes (or less) after my camera batteries died. Not a big deal since these were Chicago jumping spiders with attention deficit disorder: staying still is not one of their specialties, it would seem. Having said that, I'll say that this is a gorgeous photograph: such a lovely specimen. I love those fang guards! Who says spiders don't have a sense of fashion!?!?! This is a lovely specimen, not too different from one I saw on my bedroom wall (and yes, I photographed it). This is great!
