I was born and raised in the "South Bay" before it became "Silicon Valley". I went to Cal State Hayward and graduated with a B.A. in Art. I went back to school at the local JC and got my degree in technical illustration. For the next 25 years I worked as an illustrator and graphic artist at a hand-full of high tech companies. As of December 2012 I officially retired from the "Rat Race". I now have time for my art. Even though I have been a member of the Renderosity community for about 3 years, it has been a silent partnership on my part. I have been enjoying everone else's "Labors of Love" without giving anything in return. That will change.

Beautiful scene !

What amazing shadows! Fantastic arrangement and I love your camera work! Spectacular props! You did a bang-up job with this set too. The angling of the left wall is you're own doing, I am 99% certain. Looks great! How you got the shadows I have no idea and that makes it even more thrilling! Tremendous work, my friend!

Thanks for the very kind commentary, Ziggy. Actually the shadows are nothing more than 2x4's in place of a normal ceiling. Using a distant light for the main light gives you regular spaced shadows. Using a single point light will distort the shadows making for some rather interesting effects. As for the walls, they are simply 90 degree walls made of marble with a wainscoting. The camera was simply moved to the right of center and angled down slightly. No secret here. Thanks again for your comments.

Wish I had an imagination half as inspired as yours. Excellent creation!!!!

My man! Start simple. Grab a random object from your runtime. Put it on a pedestal of your liking and in a small room. Now start adding textures and lighting to everything. Now go into your runtime again and grab something that has nothing to do with what is in the room already. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Scale this new object to your visual liking and texture this. Move this object around the room to a nice spot. Render. Check the render for lights, shadows, textures, composition, etc. Start playing around with the lights and camera angles and render any time. "That's Inspiration". Really, just let your mind go. Everything is fair game!

I tried unsuccessfully to get that strong Venetian blind shadow effect the other day . I created planks with create a new primitive and used a distant light source. I apparently threw in the towel too early. You have inspired me to give it another go. Thanks.

Hey "X", "Don't give up the ship" (LOL) Something you might try also is view your entire scene through your sun or distant light or spot light, which ever is you main source, and move that light so you can see where the shadows should fall. If the planks are to close together simply scale them to increase separation. Don't forget to add some edge softness to the shadow effect. Any more questions just ask and most of all hang in there. This can be a very rewarding effect.

Great work on this wonderful scene my friend.

Good stuff. Those objects hanging on the wall really interest me. :-) I have a fascination for anything that looks like a Gear or cog. The shadows from the rafters are a great effect too. "Eclectic" and unique creation here my friend.

Great scene. Cleverly masked by the deep shadows. So really draws you in to see what's going on.

WOW Dave! The shadows and lighting in this is awesome! Love the look of sunlight flowing through blinds. Very cool effect. Must have taken a LONG time to get everything in this scene set up so perfectly. Super symmetry to it too. Great work. As you no doubt can tell, I'm still catching up on comments. I was nearly there a couple days ago but then real life caught up to me again. ;-)
