Description

The larva of Inachis io, the Peacock Butterfly, on nettles by the river. We used not to be able to see the river in June for nettles, but in recent years the council has successfully managed the Stour Valley Nature Reserve to benefit all users, from invertebrates to fisherman, otters to horse-riders and naturalists to dog-walkers and cyclists. So now the nettles are there in huge stands, but not lining the entire bank, so everyone is happy. See some more of this group Here

Great capture. Reminds me of my childhood when we used to raise them in a jar. Gloves and scissors were always handy.

I had to go and see what the adults look like. Some things really do improve with age. With this crowd I should think nettles would be less of a problem. Nice to see someone somewhere is concerned about the natural places and people's access to them.

Nice macro of the ugly critters as they voraciously forage their way through the foliage, Andrea. From ugly duckling to swan in their passage to Peacock Butterfly.

What a wonderful find, and great photo. More impressive is that you know which butterfly larvae this is.

In zoom, they look like larvae, but also like a strange kind of caviar. It's just amazing, in both shots, how they seem to "grow" on the stems and leaves, and just take them over. Like streusel. It's such a visceral sight, esp the way they mold themselves to the contours of the plant, just oozing all over its contours. A wonderful capture; and as CavalierLady says, impressive that you know which larvae this is. But then your knowledge must make you that much more aware, so you can capture these to begin with. Wonderful shot, and all these shots make one grateful that you give us so many views of the kingdoms and queendoms beneath our nose.
