I love her expression of bored disinterest on her face, the relationship between the two, if there was one, along with the title, makes the brain swirl with delight as a consequence, was she a camp follower paid in full, or a relative about to inherit?

Well, I think I got it ... especially knowing you ... the expression says "Well, who would have expected anything else?" You are repeating the old saying: "In war, truth is the first casualty." ... or words to that effect. Æschylus, I think, though I think I found something like it in von Clausewitz at one time. I rather like that ambiguous object in the background. The field piece is very nice, but how in hell they got it into that non-trafficable terrain is more than I want to think about. The setting is very good; neither hot nor cold, not bright, not dark ... Nature takes a neutral stance in our affaires d'armes. Colours are fabulous!

Oh ... by the way, Æschylus probably didn't say exactly that, English not having been invented yet. He probably said something like: "Στον πόλεμο, η αλήθεια είναι το πρώτο θύμα." LOL
