Description

Captured 4/27/14, at the beautiful Renaissance Faire, held at the beautiful Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, in semi beautiful Irwindale, California. Except for a few subtle differences, this is almost an exact copy of the Fun at the Faire #1 - Lords n' Nobelwomen photo, which I posted when I first began this Ren series. Such court civility and graciousness in this poignant tableau. I love this shot and why I'm showing it. To this curmudgeon, the opulently dressed dude on the left is really making a move on the lovely grande dame, a woman of obvious taste and quality, ingratiatingly clutching her hand, while she stands smiling sweetly, either to patronize him by politely soaking up his ode/poetry quotations, or maybe she is really buying his savoir faire offerings, in turn to invite him later to afternoon tea in her spacious garden, and then to an evening at the Globe Theatre as her escort. Please ZOOM for the lavish details. Toodles.

It's a superb shot, Harry; I think you're right, it seems as though he must be praising her highly, and she is graciously acknowledging him. This group's costumes are wonderful, and seem closer to "authentic" than the usual ones; perhaps they are members of some historical acting troupe. At any rate this is just lovely, and very well done, my friend!

I went back and found the first one. I like looking at them together for the first one seems to be the moment of greeting and this one is slightly further along in the conversation. He is no longer looking straight at her, but seems to be also looking back into the story that he is telling her. The fact that he retains the capture of her hand, and the encouraging tilt of her head, tell me that the story is pleasing to her, and perhaps it is a memory shared between them. I like the lady in black with her hands demurely clasped together. She has a serene presence. The costumes are wonderful. I find myself staring longer than is strictly polite at the backside of the gentleman in green and black. I love folds of the fabric of his breeches. The lady in gold has interesting 2 layered sleeves. Excellent capture!

Splendid, Harry. Many of your portraits in this series show people in various joyous poses, looking at you or elsewhere, joyously acknowledging their fun at the fair. Others are random, looking at you or elsewhere, caught in those one-of-a-kind moments that are the essence of good street photography. But some have the pomp and circumstance of Renaissance high society, the kind of pageantry that Renaissance societies wanted to be 'known' for, their courtly side (we get the word "courtesy" from "court"). And that's what you have here. It has the air of a dance---no doubt a dance of manners and hidden desire; and there were group dances from that age that used these very gestures: you showed us some in your pics of dances from the time, with their curtsies and bows, the gentle acknowledgment of attraction, coyness, invitation and sexual innuendo. Here, the woman is facing slightly away from him, but looking at him with joy---a gesture that social historians would call partly inviting/partly protective (the latter, from her slight turning away from him). It's all perfected in this capture. And the rest of the people are draped in their finest Renaissance (or similar) finery (wth a few modern-clad people in the background). Beautifully placed against that bright yellow house, which is like a sun illuminating them...A beautiful piece, and another side to this many sided series, which still stuns because it keeps coming and coming, without letup in quality and richness. This was a great place to start the series too...and I'm all for repeats here and there. In this context, the image re-affirms one of the more stately aspects of this amazing event.
