Description

I've been asked to do a cover for a fanzine called the COLLECTORS CLUB NEWSLETTER. This was a group I was very active with waaay back in the 1980s & 1990s. It recently reformed on Facebook and resumed publication as both a print magazine and as a PDF. I've got carte blanche to do whatever I want, so I decided to create a classic, old school comic book cover starring the group's mascot. I created the character with a Genesis 1 base using the Michael 5 morphs and head. The props were collected from a variety of places (including some purchased, some free). This is just a simple posed shot of our hero, Captain E. The actual cover will feature him battling a villain in a classic Marvel/DC Comics style cover. If you've followed my other work, you've seen that I've been trying to achieve a gritty b&w art style suitable for a horror project. That style is cool, but not appropriate for this project. So, I dusted off my old copy of Manga Studio 4 and started working with it to see if I can achieve the old 1980s comic look that I'm shooting for. Truthfully, I've only ever played around with this software before. But this time I stayed focused for about 3+ hours, experimenting with different brushes and work techniques (turning the page at different angles helped me achieve some of the natural curves that were giving me problems at first). This was a learning project, and that's why it's so erratic. There are too many different line widths and techniques used (I hate that crosshatched corner in the cape). But, it was a useful experience and I think that, with some more work, I'll be able to improve enough so that the cover (due in just over 2 weeks!) won't embarrass me. ------------------ Note on the b&w / color image here. These are actually two separate versions of the image (b&w and color) I sent to the editor (maybe he can use it as a small, interior image). Rather than post each of them, I decided to combine them here. I kinda like the effect, actually...

Nice result, I agree that blending both versions was a good idea, and well, the results confirm that. Good luck with the project.

impressive drawing and effects. I started drawing comic book characters way back in my 20's. I failed to follow through, as oil painting

Very cool! I have an old copy of Mango Studio 4 lying around somewhere myself and I don't think I've ever used it. You really tempt me to break it out and try it with what you've done here! Good job!
