I was asked to create a cover for a small-press magazine that focuses on comics and geek culture from the 1970s-1990s: The Collectors Club Newsletter #107. I decided to take one of their old mascots (from way back around issue #30. The magazine is collected in "letter format" (people write long letters to the editor and to each other, and this goes on for ages like an analog forum). So, the old mascot has the name of CAPTAIN EPISTLE. Epistle meaning letter writing. I created this using the M4 unimesh figure with the James morphs, plus some tweaks to the muscles. I bought the cape commercially, but was lucky to find free boots and trunks. I created the custom texture for the body and head in Photoshop. I also got lucky in that I found a free Dr. Doom armor and tunic. I had to add a lot of morphs and fit tweaks to the cape, but it since I only needed the one pose, it wasn't too bad (if I had to use this model for a whole comic, it would take forever). Since I was shooting for an old-school look, I decided it was finally time to sit down and attempt to learn Manga Studio 4 EX. It took a long time to get comfortable with the tools, but near the end I was finally getting the results I wanted. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the final result.
