Description

Our guide Holm took us out to meet her friend Sig Sigursson. Siggi, as he is known, is a married father of five, sheep herder, farmer and school bus driver. In his spare time he built a replica of an Icelandic home that was common 1,000 years ago and conducts informative talks to visitors like us. That’s Siggi in historic Viking dress standing in the doorway to greet us.

Very impressive building and character! Something tells me that this home is very warm and snug no matter the outside conditions

Mowing the roof must be a bit of a pain but great looking building.

Siggi has spare time? He obviously needs more children. What a fascinating structure.

LOL @ Andrea! :) I agree ... it's fascinating. It looks so snug and warm! And dark. I bet it's dark in there. Very cool!

Impressive work. Being a school bus driver with 5 kids I'm sure he needs a home away from home. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like a giant wig LOL but somehow strange and yet fascinating "architecture". I think everything here is practical and useful. Excellent image!!

Love Andrea's comment, and ironsoul's as well. You often see, in travel pics, shots of "the people we met along the way". We all do it. But man, this shot is terrific. You don't often see a guy posing for you in front of an old Norse hut. And that's one helluva a home. It shows how much they packed into those walls, to keep them impenetrable, non-destructable (I assume the winds could get pretty desperate), and warm. Also, you captured it when the grasses on top were mainly flowing the same way---like it combed itself for you, before you shot it. (I would pay to see pics of you and Siggi crawling the roof and combing it, and you shouting, "this is just for the SHOT, I promise! Then we'll put it all back...") Siggi has on a great old outfit. And with that icy mountain range behind, you couldn't have built a better backdrop. Wonderful shot. Evocative of a lot of what you've communicated from this trip; and as a "snapshot of people we met," it's just the best. (It's the BOMB, as some would say. I hadn't heard that expression in years, until I watched Breaking Bad...)
