Description

The beach during a glorious sunset after a winter storm. In summer the view is very different, with the cabins and the umbrellas to protect the guests from the sun. In the mist you can see the bulky shape of the Excelsior Hotel. The Hotel Excelsior has always been the focal point of social life on the Venice Lido and is one of the most luxurious and famous hotels in the world. It was made famous during the mid 1920s when it became one of the most fashionable spots in Europe with its very own cabaret called Chez Vous. The Excelsior was the creation of architect Nicolo Spada working with Giuseppe Volpi of the Italian Great Hotel Company (Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi or CIGA) and opened on 21st July 1908 with a festive band, fireworks and over three thousand invited guests from all over the world. Situated on the beach near the Quattro Fontaine it was a vast edifice built according to that unique Venetian style tinged with Byzantine and Moorish influences, according to the local fin-de-siecle style. It was such a success that the American financier Pierpont Morgan was able with some justification to quip that 'In America, those who have visited Europe talk more of the Excelsior Palace than they do of the Doge's Palace.' Close to the summer location of the Venice Casino and the building where the Venice Film Festival takes place at the Lido every September, the Excelsior is not the only famous Hotel in the Island. The Grand Hotel des Bains, currently undergoing major renovation, was the setting for Thomas Mann's classic novel Death in Venice, and the film starring Dirk Bogarde made by Luchino Visconti in 1971. Thanks for your kind comments.

Your write-ups are always as interesting as your photos, and this is another fantastic combination; I love the mood of this image and the way it evokes so many different things. I'm in "writer mode" tonight, and so I won't be surprised if this image inspires something as images tend to do. This is great! I love the haze in the distance, the sense of calm, and the colors are soothing and quite warm. I love this. It's making a trip into my favorites.
