Description

I’ve posted mysterious holdfasts before, and I have yet to lose interest in them. They’re amazing things that always remind me of the improbable fingers of equally-improbably aliens: probably the kind that run around to the sounds of Theremin music in the background…and probably in whatever studio George Pal used in his films. These aren’t the hands (or the bodies) of 1950s-style George Pal aliens: you know the kind: they don’t have prehensile thumbs, and so they can’t hold things, but they’ve made electromagnetic levitation walking machines with goose-neck lamps on top. Those are among my favorite aliens…Martians…and I always think of them whenever I see holdfasts such as these. I can’t identify the plant. I know that it’s a green one. A rather vigorous, green one. It’s somewhat predatory, as well, since it seems to have colonial intentions that extend well beyond the range of its own…um…plot of earth. It wants whatever is in its neighbor’s yard, and is rather interested in what’s in the alley, too. I took this photo in Albany Park, in an alley. I was drawn to the color, and rather amused with the vast number of holdfasts making it possible for the vines of this plant to boldly go where no vines have gone before. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great start to the month of July.

Funny, I thought of the 1953 'War Of The Worlds' after seeing this photo but before reading your description. It's a shame we never saw more of the 'Martians' than that. Seeing a troop of them marching though the wastes of Los Angeles would have given the film an additional creepiness which would have accented an already engaging and scary film. I love the contrast in colour and brightness here. Much akin to those technicolour classics of the 50's. Especially the sci-fis. Oops. Time for the 'Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson' and his robot sidekick Geoff Peterson. Also know as 'Super Happy Funtime Hour With Robot and Old Man' in Japan.

Fabulous capture I see these all the time at work, which reminds me that I must convince them not to attack the clients or customers

Excellent color and idea. I grew up with Lost in space, Fireball XL-5 and Star treek, and this fits in a wonderfull way in all of them.
