Description

BUTTS......no!, no!...that's what they're called or sometimes pitts. Yes I was standing at the wrong end of a ( thankfully disused) rifle range when I took the photos. In the top images, the red circle is the cottage, the red line is the position of the frames. I built the target frame in the lower image to try to explain the workings....very simplefied. As I said in the previous post, there is a substantial stone wall that stands between the targets and the shooter, protection for the markers. In the upper photo (previous post ) the wall is visible under all the undergrowth to the right. Protruding from the wall are metal brackets, these would have supported an angled tin roof to protect from shrapnel, caused by bullets striking the top of the wall. A bit different??...thanks to those who had a go, difficult unless you spend time at the local rifle range, but interesting...I hope..... (Top two images are a non-copyright, free resource )

I would never have come up with that answer. I'm glad you included the last picture because it helps a lot for those of us with little imagination. I do question the position of the bullseye on the target. Geeeezzze!

I didn't know they were called that at rifle ranges too Neil. I used to draw the great war bow, which of course required mandatory practice at the butts years ago ......

That's where it began, archers targets were usually painted on the bottom of a butt ( large barrel ).
