Description
When you are traveling down the highway it can be a little disconcerting to look out the window and see what appears to be smoke rising out of the ground.
Iceland floats on a sea of magma and there are many thermal vents scattered around the island. Power stations are built near the major ones and capture the heat from the steam which is used to heat homes and businesses. The pipe in this image is part of that system.
A little HDR post work to give it that perfect apocalyptic feeling.

Great photo! And great PW, too. I have seen this in the sides of the San Salvador Volcano, and is very worrying to think about what is below it and producing it.

Fabulous capture and very cool postwork. I almost expect to see Richard B Riddick coming down from the side of the mountain being chased by some mercs

Terrific! (I had an ad friend who used to shout, "BOFFO!" Mel Brooks said that his mother---to sound American---would shout "Boffo in Boston Mel! You killed 'm in Cleveland!" That has nothing to do with your shot, but I wanted to share it...) A great piece of postwork---and the original shot's no slouch either: You got the apocalyptic steam, how it cuts into that sky, and the angle of the two billows criss crossing each other, and the desolate slopes making their way to the observers. Your postwork does make it look apocalyptic: You've enhanced the intruding light; and that burst---1/3 of the way from the left frame?---looks like a comet that suddenly showed up. Love it. Can you imagine looking out your back window and seeing this? You really caught a lot of Icelandic spirit in this trip.
