Description
The devastating fire of 1988, which started with a single lightning strike, burned close to 800,000 acres in Yellowstone (about 36% of the park). But there was also a not as famous, but very large windstorm that downed thousands of trees in the park in 1984 & there are periodic smaller fires & windstorms, as well as avalanches, that bring down large numbers of trees. I can't say for sure what brought down these particular trees, but scenes like this are fairly common in the park. But there are also many thousands of young trees that have sprouted from the ashes of the devastation in evidence & the rate of regeneration has exceeded the estimations of most experts...
I used the built-in panorama mode on my camera for this shot, so no stitching was required. Please zoom for much better detail.

It's amazing how fast the area can recover, if left alone. case in point, the Mt. St. Helens region Great capture
