Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!Â
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper! Â
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

These caterpillars are a nice colour with the stripes, they can be attractive at this stage too... albeit not if they are on your prize plants.

They are very colourful, they sure are getting stuck into good food.

You guys may be interested to know that these guys have been introduced into Australia to control the ragwort. We don't have a great history of successfully introducing species to Australia without them breeding out of control.......eg Cane toads, foxes, rabbits, feral pigs, Brumbys, feral cats, feral goats, feral camels etc etc etc etc etc.............oh and us white folk better be included in that list too!

All dressed and ready for Halloween. I read that ragwort is poisonous to some animals so they have learned to leave these critters alone since they are full of ragwort. A terrific capture.

They look like they're wearing their prison stripes, and trying furiously to eat their way out...great find and capture!

Superb capture Andrea, I used to collect these as a kid, and keep them in an aquarium with Oxford ragwort to feed on, I had an old stoking over the top to keep the air fresh, successfully bred adults and let them go.

A Stocking even :)

Great shot! I'm glad you posted this. I came across these same kind of caterpillars during a walk yesterday and snapped a few pictures, but I had no idea what they were. Now, as I look up the scientific name you provided, I see they are the larvae of the reddish Cinnabar moth, which I have seen flying around the area for the last few years (and, again, I had no idea what they were). Your photo has provided a great learning experience. :) Thank you!

A wonderful capture and they do look ravenous!
