Description

Dragonflies are among the fastest flying insects in the world. Dragonflies can fly backwards, change direction in mid-air and hover for up to a minute. Robert John Tillyard claimed to have recorded the Southern Giant Darner flying at nearly 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) in a rough field measurement. However, the greatest reliable flight speed records are for other types of insects. In general, large dragonflies like the hawkers have a maximum speed of 10–15 metres per second (22–34 mph) with average cruising speed of about 4.5 metres per second (10 mph). Dragonflies are major predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, wasps, and very rarely butterflies. They are usually found around marshes, lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic. Please ZooooM before it ZOOOOMS away. Have a nice day.

Great detail, clarity & color. If I recall correctly, you were the one who recently said you weren't very good at photographing insects. This photo puts the lie to that statement in a big way...

A group of three big dragon flies flew in an checked us out when I was a kid playing with my brother. For a moment it seemed like they were making up their minds if we were worth the trouble or not, but then they continued on their way. I was more amazed than scared, but they did seem pretty big at the time... :)

The way you describe it, it sounds like a Harrier Jump Jet. You also forgot to mention one major area where they are found, Andrea's garden. All seriousness aside, this is a superb capture.
