Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper!
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

Although Carla 'B', Meadow & JB are frightened of fireworks, they seem to be fine with thunder. Poor Ralph must be awful for him.

Poor Ralph. And poor you, that you had to sit with him on the floor. I got 3 hours sleep last night. At 4 i had a stomach attack, which I got rid of after about an hour and had just fallen to sleep, when VIKTOR, the redcurrant harvest Machine, began to havest the field....no more sleep. Though, I had a 1½´s nap in this afternoon :-) We got a bit of movement in the leaves of the shaking aspen, so I moved out there to get the little breeze. Awesome. Pheew!

I used to have a dog that was like that; he would shake uncontrollably for hours after thunder or fireworks. There is a product called Thundershirt for anxiety in dogs, it's a tightly-wrapped jacket that gives them a sense of safety; I got one for my little dog for when I went away on trips, but she's not afraid of much and any anxiety can be quickly eased by a food treat. I can't post the link here, but you can copy/paste this to check them out... http://www.thundershirt.com/Product/Thundershirt.aspx?item_guid=ad60b946-f758-45e2-a589-331dda09637e&gclid=CIiV8ZO06L8CFQsyaQodepIAYQ

Oh, bless Ralphie's heart! And bless your heart, Andrea! I had a couple that were afraid of thunder, but such violent shaking and you having to stay up with him till all hours of the night! I do feel for you! Thank goodness you found some meds so poor Ralphie can get some rest. Hope you were able to get some rest, too! I've seen advertisements for the product Denise mentioned, but I don't know how well it works. I found a lot of 'hits' on you tube if you want to research it.

My Jazz is just the same, he trembles with fear, but barks incessantly too. I think it is his way of handling it.

Its always the big tough ones. My childhood dog used to crawl into bed with me and shake like a paint can in a mixing machine. Fortunately you don't live in New York. We used to have thunder storms all the time. Poor baby looks exhausted.

A strange pose in Ralphie's restless night. My covers look like that in the morning. The FlickR link didn't work for me!

Oh, poor Ralphie! I'm glad you kept Sadie's medicine and that he got a bit of relief. And you as well!! Mandy is one who doesn't mind it, fortunately.

Good job!

I'm glad you love your dogs so much as to be willing to spend time on the floor giving comfort when needed. :) My own little dog - much smaller than Ralphie - liked the thunder, but I think it was because when she was young, I used to zip her up against me inside my jacket with her head sticking out, and we would sit on the porch and watch the thunder and lighting storms together. This is a great photo of your Ralphie! Love it!

I seemed to have missed these shots when initially posted. Poor fellow, it must have been terrifying for him... it's easy to forget that dog's can get the same nervous conditions as us human's... maybe it has some bearing on when he was cruelly kept locked in a shed before he was rescued from the cruel owners, I seem to remember reading this on the rescue site.... correct me if I'm wrong?, but I'm thinking if he was in a shed at all hours and weather conditions it must have been terrifying for him.... some people don't deserve to have the privilege of loving pets in their lives... thankfully you rescued him and the rest is history but alas trauma's of the past as with us human's can remain with us as a legacy of those past experience's and we have to work on and around them.

You've postworked Ralph to look like he's truly in a dreamland---likely, given the night he'd had. And the capture shows a dog truly gone to the world, and draped in whatever he can drape himself in. A true dog capture. The flickr version is more a great night's sleep---he's sans blankets, and it's a delightful shot. But here, he's definitely done in by a long trying journey. And is that a stuffed animal underneath him? I hope so. (Or pillows. If it's fritz, man, he had to have had a bad night!) Wonderful, Andrea.
