Wow this is stunning. I have no idea of the scale but it looks like it was done through a disecting scope with stacking software. Would love for you to tell us a bit about what it is and how you shot it! Great depth of field and incredible focus. Wow, just did a full size and man that is wicked detailing. Congrats on an incredible shot!

hi brewgirlca, Yeah, I did a stack. There are about 40 focus planes in it, but I still see focus banding and think parts of it are over-contrasty and I plan to work more on lighting skills. The bug was placed inside a styrofoam cooler and I used a macro lens. Light came in from the left through a hole that was cut in the cooler and covered with a piece of paper for diffusion. You are very kind!

forgot to say about what it is... it is the transparent dried out shell of probably a beetle after molting. The entire thing is about an inch long and what you are looking at here is around 1/4 inch.

Now this is scary, excellent macro work.

Interesting title, ugly critter. He's saying, "Make peace or I'll pinch you!" You went to a lot of trouble on that one! Wow! I would love to know more about this process.

Oh, my. Excellent work. I really see the macro challenge in this, particularly the focus question. Thanks for posting how you did the photo. If the photo had been black/white, my guess would have been a scanning electron microscope at very low magnification. As for the beetle, without the shell, it's VERY vulnerable until the new shell hardens. It would be interesting to see what it looked like just after exiting the shell! Keep up the good work! :-)

Amazing macro - needs a zoom to fully appreciate - the stuff nightmares are made of...

Thanks no zoom. I don't want to wake up screaming :)

Very good macro. A pretty scary critter. It's a luck that those monsters are so little.
