I'm torn between thinking these marvelous critters are ugly, and they're wonderful. I'm glad I can't normally see all the details, though. But it never hurts to look at such an image as this.

Great capture. I wonder what lens you use to achieve this so close.

Hi Aqua, Canon mp-e 65 I bought the lens about a year ago and had very few (if any) good shots with it. My success with it thus far (in my mind anyway) is 1) Focus stacking which in turn means (for the moment) a) non-moving target b) in a mini studio 2) Good lighting to bring out detail, which in turn means (at least for the moment). a) shooting into a Styrofoam cooler b) diffused flash 3) Photoshop. A flat lighted, focus-stacked image is not so interesting. If everything is in focus, nothing is in focus. So: a) I add selective contrast to those areas I wish to be highlighted. b) Same thing with sharpening c) Same thing with a high-pass overlay d) NIK software to apply color here and there, all with the purpose of keeping detail, but trying to apply a place for the eye to focus... These are the things that are bringing me forward, Some day I hope to be able to do something similar with targets in the wild.

Awesome capture, this little guy is very Alien looking. The pattern on his legs amazes me, and I think those black spikes might be directly linked to his nervous system. If so he doesn't miss much that's going on around him. Super cool !

I wonder how he crawled out of that shell. Must be quite a contortionist to do so. This photo is just as excellent and amazing as your previous post. And seemingly more work to get all the depth aspects right without seams showing. Keep up the good work! :-)
