Description

Greetings Folks, The return of the Legends Series.. Here is a Jet legend indeed.. Unfortunately I have no shots of a Phantom flying.. No shots of RAF or USAF ones either (good ones that is), still hunting, never give hope yet.. This was taken at RAF Waddington 2012.. This specially painted Phantom F4F of the Luftwaffe, shows about everything you'd want to know of Phantom deployment in their airforce.. Who, where, how! The following spring they were retired, no more do they fly in the Luftwaffe.. Unit I believe is on the tail.. Enjoy and zoom is possible on this Rob P.S. The Aston shot yesterday was taken inside the gated drive way of Burghley House.. The 'expensive Aston's were there, the 'cheap' one on the grass!

Used to see these a lot in Somerset when they were based at Yeovilton. Super shot Rob and thanks for the comments on my efforts.

Ahhhh I remember this...Waddington was great because so many aircraft, like this one, were not barricaded off. Great photo, and reminder of a great day.....( 5 sleeps :-)

There's only one adjective that comes to mind: Phabulous! Been a "phan" of the Phantom for a long time. It's one of those planes that "just looks right". The one time I got to an airshow that featured a flying display by F4's, we arrived late... just as we arrived at the gate, they buzzed my car!

Great profile shot of one mother of an aircraft, Rob. The Phantom has been around for eons. And that tail section is overly awesome.

This brings back a lot of memories.... I worked on the comm-nav systems on F4Ds, Es, and Cs when I was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam....experience. You haven't lived until you've developed an ability to fall asleep as these manned rockets kick in the afterburners to take off - and your barracks is a block away from the runway... Awesome shot of this Phantom, Rob!

There's a Phantom sitting outside the little outdoor display when you enter Forbes Field in Topeka - I think you and Bill were there. I got quite a shock when I was there several years ago. That Phantom was assigned to the squadron at Udorn RTAFB where I was stationed. I probably worked on that plane.

Both the Air Force and the Marine Corps flew them out of Da Nang. Whenever there was a test hop (after an engine change for example) if the pilot was good (meaning how to bring up the troop morale) he would take off, clean up the gear and keep it low on the deck ( I mean runway) until the end of the runway and pull it straight up until it was out of sight.
