Description
Lido, the Island that forms the border between the lagoon and the Adriatic Sea, is a strange place to live in. In winter it is made of a series of small hamlets and some clusters of houses separated by more or less deserted stretches of sandy dunes or expanses of beaches, some of them free, others private (that is hotel-owned). In winter it is the first to be hit by winter storms, and a violent wind called 'bora' coming from Slovenia. Fogs well up from the sea like a tidal wave. I remember that walking to school was like wading about in dark milk soup. Then, from June to late August Lido becomes a cosmopolitan fashionable beach, where Saudi princes close part of the beach for their harems, and Russian millionaires toss a fortune away at the casino. If this is not enough, in late August-early September the International Movie Festival attracts swarms of starlets and toy boys looking for a wealthy sponsor, and some real star, from Marylin Monroe to George Clooney. After the movie madness traditionally the beaches are empty of families and the so-called September people start to gather, that is gay people coming from all over the world, but especially Europe when I was a child.
Here you can see a piece of chain from some boat and a pleasant sunset after a storm.
Thank you for your kind comments.

This image has a really nice, cryptic quality to it, which works really well. I think it's because of the empty beach and the boat chain that could also be a piece of seaweed or something, if you don't look carefully. The mood of this piece is really nice and the colors are really crisp, sharp and inviting. I love scenes like this, and this looks like the kind of place I'd love to visit. Your writeup is evocative as well, and I think it's one of your best; you always give such great information, which you do here, and with this, you turn some really wonderful phrases. It's also funny, because I'm now reading Umberto Eco's The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana, and there is a substantial part of that book dedicated to fog, and when you mentioned it, I got all sorts of images in my head, most prominently what the world must be like when you have to walk through "milk soup". THAT is such an image in and of itself! Brilliant. I also like the written snapshot you give here, you deliver such a great sense of place, and well, the term "September people" would also make a great title for a story; there's a mysterious quality to it, as if you're describing something other than people arriving in September. Rich, heady stuff, and an evocative image! I love it when both word and visual image evoke something, and...well...this whole piece, written and photographed, evokes. This is really great!

Sandra, this is a fabulous photo and a thoughtful presentation to go with it as only you can create. A visit to your gallery was a much needed thing for me tonight.

Really a nice picture. I like the detail of the flying bird.as well as the chain... I've been myself one of the "September people" for so many years... Living so near I was tempted to visit the Lido in winter too, when it looks neglected and barely inhabited, I avoided the foggy or rainy days though... I like the feeling of the 'after the storm' of your picture...
