Description

The habitat of the Great Auk once ranged from the coast of Europe, north to Iceland, Greenland, to Newfoundland and down the east coast of North America. Swift and agile swimmers, able to dive to great depths, it lived most of its life at sea. Flightless, it was hunted by humans and the last known pair was killed on Eldey Island in 1844. To make up for exterminating the bird Icelanders erected this statue on the site of the bird's last stand as a memorial. All better now.

Just imagine how it must have been when the coasts were thick with them.

Interesting and sad history. Man doesn't seem to be in his element unless he's destroying something. :(
