Description
We will be heading back to Florida in about a month and I know that I have done Iguanas before but this guy has it all and he is running free and not in a cage or at the zoo. Iguanas are not indigenous to Florida, they were imported as pets. The fold of skin under his chin is called a dewlap and he can inflate it to attract females, intimidate rivals or scare off predators. The large round scale on his cheek is known as the subtympanic shield but it has no use other than to indicate that you are looking at a male. This guy is about 40 inches (100cm) long. He has a third eye (Parietal eye), visible as a pale scale, on the top of the head (above his eye) and used for sensing changes in light such as an aerial predator. Check out the claws and he has a nasty set of sharp teeth. Some info from Wikipedia. Zoom will work.

Very cool image and description I'm trying to figure out a poem using orange iguana and nothing seems to work unless of course you go to Haiku then all you have to do is think about Godzilla and Matthew Broderick

Oh 'WOW', that info from a third eye, that's interesting (and also sounds a bit creepy ;-)). It's a very impressing looking animal, Dana. I like that sort of 'comb' of hair on his back, it's very beautiful, as well as all the drawings on his skin. But I would be scared if I suddenly came across this beast, I guess. Thank you so much for sharing, and I hope your parents in law are better in the mean while.

Wow...I never knew there was such a thing as an orange iguana!! I thought they only came in green, LOL. Nice shot! Oh, you're heading back to Florida in about a month? You guys are leaving just as the weather gets good and the leaves change! I have to say that I think fall is coming early this year. Have been seeing golden rod and black-eyed Susans for a couple of weeks and they usually don't come out until the very end of August...and the geese on a nearby pond are flying in their V formation when they go on their nightly flight. The Farmer's Almanac says it is going to be a long, super cold winter. Great! Guess we better start saving up to buy heating oil! Remember us when you are in the warmth of Florida, LOL.
