Description

The wood stork (Mycteria americana) is an American wading bird in the stork family. The adult is a large bird which stands 33 to 45 inches (83 to 115 cm) tall and with a wing span of 58 to 71 inches (140 to 180 cm) across the wings. Males typically weigh 5.5 to 7.3 lbs (2.5 to 3.3 kg) and females weigh 4.4 to 6.2 lbs (2.0 to 2.8 kg) although large males can weigh up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg). The head is dark brown with a bald, black face, and the thick down curved bill is dusky yellow. The bare head and the long bill, which can measure up to 10 inches (25.5 cm) in length, render the wood stork distinctive from other large waders in its range. As of June 26, 2014 it is classified as a threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That is strange for us since we see 4 or 5 every day in south Florida. Photo taken at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands west of Delray Beach, Florida. Weight and length numbers from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Looks very similar to our Ibis, which well also call 'dump chooks' as they feed on all the scraps at the local rubbish tip. ~Cheers~
