Description

Dear friends, thanks for your interest! I am very proud to share this magnificent boat with you: This ship here is the largest ever built replica of a Viking Longboat. It name is "Havhingsten fra Glendalough", which means "Sea Stallion of Glendalough". This here is a scientific experiment under real conditions, realised by some archeological scientists and experienced sailors and a great group of volunteers. They try to find out how Vikings were able to cross the Atlantic with open boats like this. The original ship was built in 1042 a.C. near Dublin, Ireland. The Viking shipbuilders used irish oaktrees from a small town Glendalough near Dublin, so the new ship was named after the village. In 1053 the original ship was submerged together with others in the Roskilde Fjord in Northern Danmark, to protect harbour of the old Viking village. In the fifties of the last century archeologists detected the old ship together with 4 others under the sea level and began to dig them out. The place is well known under scientists as "Skuldelev Group" of viking ships, and today there is the very fine "Roskilde Ship Museum" where they study and restore these old ships. This ship here is a replica of the "Skuldelev II" longboat and was built from 2002 to 2004 in the Roskilde Museum. In 2007 it crossed the Northern Sea, surrounded Scotland and reached Dublin with great interest and a big welcome of the Irish people. Technical data: The boat is 30 Meters long and 3,80 Meters wide. Its dephs is only 90 centimeter. The boat can be sailed and rowed and can take nearly 80 persons, armed warriors in the old days. It is usable near the coast, on the open ocean as well as in great and small rivers. As a sailboat it reaches nearly 20 knots (!!) This here was a spontaneous meeting in the Stralsund harbour, nothing was planned. And the last sensation: This boat here will visit Berlin at the 6th September at main attraction of the great Viking Exhibitionism from historical museums of Berlin, Kopenhagen and London. Please watch out, we will show you some brandnew pics from Berlin in the next weeks!! Dear friends, thanks for your nice comments for my older pics and a special "THANKS" for those who took my last pic as ther favorites. Feels good! Please feel free for some new comments. Thanks! Midnite here, ghost hour....

WOW...wirklich beeindruckend. Tolle Info. Dann werden wir uns das"Schiffchen" mal ansehen. Mit 30 m Länge ist es bestimmt nicht zu übersehen auf der Spree. Zumal ich ein Faible für Wikinger habe.
