Description
Because I had signed up late for the trip to Iceland there was no room for me at the hotel where our group had first met. We said our goodbyes at the hotel where I would spend my last night in Reykjavik. I had been craving a pizza for several days and had been given the name and address of a pizzeria near my hotel. DeVito’s Pizza was at 126 Laugavegur, just a few blocks down from me. I walked to Laugavegur and noticed the building on the corner was 105. I turned left but the numbers kept getting smaller, 95, 85, 80, so I turned around and walked the other way. I passed 105 Laugavegur and crossed the street. And the numbers kept getting smaller, 95, 85, 80. Giving up on the pizza, I decided to enter the first restaurant that appealed to me. That turned out to be an eatery serving Nepalese food. Sitting near the door was a woman from my tour group. Laura was a pleasant young woman from Manchester who spent her evenings knitting. And for a woman with the figure of Olive Oyl she was putting away a massive amount of dumplings, chicken and fried rice. I joined her and we spent a pleasant hour together. Walking back to my hotel, bloated from overeating, I stopped at a 1011 convenience store for something unhealthy to snack on later. The 1011 is the largest chain of convenience stores in Iceland similar to the 7-11 outlets found in America.
I was lying on my bed watching the BBC. It had been a great trip but we had not had a lot of luck finding the Northern Lights. It had been a tiring week but I thought, “I’ve come this far, let’s try one more time.” And so I found myself, at 11 P.M., with camera and tripod standing at the water’s edge and bundled against the cold. I decided to give myself until midnight and then go back to the hotel and get some sleep.
It began as a faint glow over the hills across the bay.
And then the sky opened up.
