Description

Captured way back on 5/13/06, at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California. An 80-acre site featuring 200 steam, diesel and electric locomotives as well as passenger and freight cars, streetcars, and other railway equipment. Rail transportation in the West from the late 1870s through the 1960s is depicted. Okay, that's what the tour book says, but may I also add that besides a museum, the site is also a graveyard and a junkyard, with tons of rusted equipment lying around, loose rocks and tracks to scramble over, and big red ants to elude. Motto of the day there is, "watch your step!" But they do have a lovely small garden outside one of the structures. The area is a virtual desert, so don't go there in the summer, or you'll be baked to a crisp. Most of the stuff is outside, but several well maintained old streetcars are stored inside of a huge car barn. I don't know how this foto is going to come out because it was shot at a low resolution when I didn't know any better. Ergo, not much of an increase in ZOOM on this. All aboard!

Oooh, this is absolutely gorgeous, Harry; this one is in great shape, unlike most of the cars at the museum here. And I know what you mean about that rocky terrain and the tracks, it's definitely a challenge to get around and stay upright! Despite the small size of the shot, it's easy to admire the craftsmanship on this loco. Thanks for the dedi, it's a real beauty!

This really is an amazing capture of that old diesel locomotive, Harry. This sounds like a place I'd like to visit despite some of the conditions you mentioned.

Yeah it's a beauty, as Denise says. And quite vivid with real presence, considering the resolution and size of the shot. (Ie, the physical size---the fact that it's small even in zoom.) It's a vivid, in-one's-face capture, with stunning contrasting colors. (I wonder if they actually traveled with those hues, or if the hues were strictly for display). And the foreground white---as well as the sky's white---make the train's presence stand out all the more. You've done some stunning train work here, incl your most recent pieces, and I wanted to pay homage to at least some of it in my current sessions. And re the grounds: We have trainyards---non-museum---which are like what you describe: Junkyards, ghost yards, stuff strewn all over, a veritable Badlands, and risky for anyone without the surest footing. They make great photo-ops, but they're dangerous and often not easy to get into, as they're often locked or off-limits to the public---maybe for safety reasons, I don't know. Anyway, they're bits of another planet smack-dab-in-the-middle of our planet. And I imagine that, in your part of the world, they'd be ovens in summertime. I'm going to do another rail shot. I don't want to just leave it at one, today...
