Description
Greetings Folks...and thanks for the messages and requests for more Legends quickly.. lol
So, here you go...
Not one you are likely to see everyday.. Not one most ever know about and, considering 400 were built, you would be lucky to see one!
Only four are left, three flying, as of 2009..
This is the Max Holste MH.1521 Broussard..
The Max Holste MH.1521 Broussard is a 1950s French six-seat utility monoplane designed by Max Holste to meet a French Army requirement.. It actually ended up flying with 15 Airforces!
The prototype Broussard first flew on 17 November 1952 and was followed by the first civil and military production aircraft in June 1954, and 363 were built between 1954 and 1959. Its similarity to the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver in looks, capability and performance lead it to be nicknamed 'the French Beaver'.. No comment about that Neil ;-)
It saw service in the Algerian War as an Army cooperation aircraft, mostly as an artillery spotter and in an air supply/ambulance role where its good short-field performance and resistance to ground fire were required. Its distinctive sound, made by its noisy radial engine and large propeller, was a disadvantage as the Algerian guerrillas could hear its approach long before other aircraft. It remained in service until the 1980s, and can still be seen in France, the UK, and the United States being operated by enthusiasts or collectors.
It is sometimes spotted at the back in Legends photos..
This was taken in the Rain (again), at Waddington..
Stat Time :
Crew: 1
Capacity: 5
Powerplant: 1 × Pratt & Whitney R-985-AN-1 radial piston engine, 336 kW (450 hp)
Maximum speed: 168 mph.
Service ceiling:18045 ft.
Hope you like.. Legends will return soon..
Rob

Comment? me? as if I would! phnaww, phnaww!! I remember this one (and the rain!), didn't realise it was that rare though. ( couldn't help noticing the 3 section folding ladder, pilot must have been a midget :-) Speaking of 'French Beaver'......DVK's French cousin Claudette is visiting The Plant, I'll have to ask her if she's got one.......

Very cool plane and interesting history I don't know as if I'd want to touch a French Beaver.....

Great capture of the handsome French aircraft, mate, but a maximum speed of 168 mph? Gimme a break. Man, you could knock it down with an Uzi at that rate.

More history for me to soak up, yay! I think I have learned more from you about aircraft than I did in 6 years in the Air Force! And keep baiting Neil...He just cracks me up all the time!
