Description

Jedburgh Abbey is near the Scottish Borders about 10 km within Scotland. It was started under King David in 1118 AD for the Order of St. Augustine. It is believed the monks originally came from France. It was a prosperous abbey that was closely allied with the Scottish noble family. Because of that, and its position near the border, it took several major beatings during the medieval wars of Scottish Independence. However, except for the loss of the roof, the abbey is still in very good condition and is a joy to explore. This was on my long term must see bucket list and I got to do it in the spring of this year. Seems a fitting timing given the Scots are voting on an independence referendum in a few days... maybe even this weekend.

What an impressive piece of architecture. Deep arches supported by clusters of segmented columns &, if I'm seeing this correctly, stacked three high! And your postwork fits the subject perfectly - it looks like a highly detailed, old-style charcoal drawing. Outstanding...

Wow! Impressive. And great POV / image. The B&W works especially well for this. There is a certain irony now that Scotland is about to vote on its independence. There is nothing but tales of doom and gloom if they secede from the UK. They are so tied up in British affairs that it seem quite dicey and difficult to extract themselves from the situation. Who knows though, maybe if they do, even if it is a bumpy first couple of years, they might do quite well. I'm sure England will miss those ocean oil fields of Scotland departs.

Oh, my eyes..... I've just spent the last 10 minutes exploring this magnificent photo of an equally magnificent structure... The detail and wonderful stonework you've captured is mind blowing, Roxy! B&W is so perfect for this, although I'll bet it's just as spectacular in color. Oh, to see this in real life! Awesome photo! That's going to add a whole new dynamic if Scotland votes to secede.... I read an article on CNN earlier today where the author was suggesting (tounge-in-cheek, of course) that the USA apologize for revolting, and re-join the UK if Scotland secedes. LOL
