Description

I saw this scene while walking to my office. It's an industrial area but with still some surviving meadows, an old church and stone walls. For some reason I decided I wanted to reproduce it in 3D. I took pictures of individual stones and of the tree stump. I modeled the tree starting with a basic shape and refining it with the sculpt brushes. Selected some polygons on the outside, split them and extruded them to create the bark. My model was close enough to the original that I was able to use my pictures for the texture of the flat parts. Modeled the stones, applied my pictures as textures and built the wall manually. I then connected all the stones in one object that I was able to refine with the sculpt tools adapting them better to each other. One advantage of this system is that, in spite of the fact that it is one object, the stones remain somehow separate and you can move them with the brush without affecting neighboring stones. Also the individual textures get assigned to selections without complicated UV work. The rest was a combination of Mograph distributed plants, single trees, and lighting. I also have a few trees outside the picture casting shadows. The composition is not very dramatic but I wanted to give the feeling of a casual snapshot. Cinema 4D, color corrected in Photoshop.

reminds me of the backgrounds in some pre-raphaelite paintings - great use of colour

Sorry I'm late in answering. Thanks for your comment. I always had in mind to remake this to emphasise better the stump against the background. maybe one day
