Description
So, I believe I may have mentioned that I have an otter. Yes, I do believe this is an otter. The issue here is that I am NOT set up to rehab these wonderful guys. I have this little girl because, once again, people are stupid. She was taken to a vets office in a large cooler. As usual, there was a fantastic story about how they came to have her. She "just appeared on the porch and would not leave!". Never mind that we do not have otters in the middle of the city. After the staff took her in and secured her in a cage, they came back out to find that the people had disappeared. I have had her for 3 weeks now. I am here to tell you, this otter was raised by people. I believe the truth goes something like this. They found her as a small and very cute pup. They took her home. After she grew large enough to trash their house and do great harm to their bodies, they threw her out. After all, "she is a wild animal. She can make it in the wild". Gotta wonder about that reason. So, when she kept crying on the porch and would not leave, they come up with what they thought would pass as the truth and dumped her at the vets office. I have found that she will not hunt for her food in the pool I have in her cage. I have to give her the fish. She has no idea how to catch the fish in the water. Turns out, otters stay with mom for about 11 months or so. Mom is very diligent about teaching the pups how to fish and find food. I am not as good at being an otter mom as I am a raccoon and fox mom. I will be taking a road trip with Wiskers at the end of the month. 600 miles each way no less. I have found a wonderful place that has one about her age that was also raised by people. They have a great place where she will have a pal and live very well. If, by chance, she does adapt to hunting in the water, they are able to do a release.

What a cute little girl! I am not surprised to hear about how she ended up in the Vets office.... Someone probably captured her as a very young pup and only when she became too difficult to maintain did they see about taking her in to the vet. It's wonderful that there are people like you out there to see to it they get the care they need.

Such a sweet face, some people think they are being kind by keeping an animal as a so called "pet" their natural habitat is in the wilderness, you only really interfere when they are injured etc,& when it is safest for you to do so.lets hope her new home she gets what she needs.it's only occasional that you cannot return them to where they come from the wild that you know that in your own heart, that they would not survive & require human parents.

Beautiful capture and I hope she adapts to her new home, a pity her prior owners did this to her and robbed her of her freedom in the wild.

Great portrait lets hope she reverts to the wild, Perhaps keeping her hungry near a well stocked fish pond might work.
