Description
Greetings Folks,
This is the FIRST time I have posted a 'Shareshot' on here and I only do this because its the only way I can show the sad state of British Military Power now..
The Royal Navy, once so very proud (it still is) and so very VERY powerful this year had its last Aircraft Carrier H.M.S. Illustrious retired due to cuts (once more)..
We now have NO Aircraft Carriers left ans will have none until 2017 at least but, will have NO aircraft for them until 2020!!!
H.M.S. Lusty as she was known to the crew was indeed the oldest ship in the Navy (32 years old).. But as we wait for those God awful F-35 things to arrive (that don't actual work yet) instead of the Harriers that were tried, battle hardened and worked, it makes you wonder, who should be running the Forces?
Two bits of good news, the new Carriers (there are two) are going to be the biggest ever used by Britain, around 90,000 tonnes I believe, not with full load, and two, the Government has allowed H.M.S Lusty to be Preserved!
3 bids are in so far from Cities in the U.K.
Good!
And yes,. this photo was NOT posed! The girls did this for the ship lol

Look on the bright side mate, the money saved can be used to pay for more over priced footballers and more luxury pads for MP's. Wouldn't wanna waste it on the poor and homeless in this country. Nice view though ;-)

Sad, very sad indeed.

A glorious picture Rob and I share your feelings.

Nice picture. The new aircraft carriers will be luxury liners compared to the old carriers. They are big with only a small hangar compared to the size of the ship. The crew will benefit from the extra space for them.

@AliceFromLake..???? A small hangar and luxury accomodation are not a good thing on an aircraft carrier....or any warship come to that surely!! Well at least with the World at peace, no conflict anywhere and all national and religious groups getting along so well at the moment, we probably won't need a military presence before 2020 anyhow. The way things are going the 2 Aircraft carriers could be the sum total of the British armed forces by 2020, I just hope they remember to keep enough sailors and airmen to man them.......

I share the sadness in your heart Rob, and see the same thing happening in my own country as well.

Only 32 and being retired? My, my, my. Oh well, at least we get a pic of bikini girls waving farewell. Hope the new carriers work out just fine. As for the F-35s, just like any ultra high tech bit of gear they will need some time to get the bugs out of them. The problem is that they are probably too high tech.

Boy, this could start a whole dialogue and ensuing argument on military power, but I won't go there. If I didn't know better, I would say to my British friends that you sound like a lot of my American friends about the subject. I'll just say that I agree with Neil. The world is in such a wonderful and peaceful state today that there really is no need for our military forces (LOL)! Hey, Rob, nice pic!!!!!!

Wonderful photo Rob

Masterful POV and composition in this shot, enhanced by the lovely broads waving to the HMS Illustrious - with hardly any men on deck - but, blimey, a real bummer in re your Royal Navy and the carriers, mate.

Only 32? The U.S.S. Enterprise was over 50 years old when she was retired.

Yeah, I know how you feel, Rob. The same blind stupidity seems to be a plague here, too. Of course groups like ISIS pose no threat to the free world at all, so a strong, well-equipped military is a non-essential..... Very cool photo, though - I love the way the ladies are waving to the carrier.

outstanding capture not my business, but if the wonderful British people(everyone I have met including relatives there) did not have to support the royal family then surely they would have more money for defense. I was surprised when Scotland voted to stay with the UK .

Great shot Rob and the girls got my attention first until I read your sad story. The good news is that you will get a couple of new carriers and preserving the old one. On the F-35, they are actually flying at Luke (they got about 7 or 8 right now out of the anticipated 140 or so). They are about as loud as the F-16s in afterburner, the F-35s are not. You are right, they have a lot of kinks to be worked out

It never seems to end does it. The crazy thing is that carriers, landing Docks etc seem to be really helpful following natural disasters when everything else on shore is in ruins. Of course I'd also love there never to be any more catastrophic typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis.... The best armed forces ever are apparently the ones that consumed "unnecessary" amounts of money and were never used. That probably means they WORKED guys??? If they get USED then that's a FAIL isn't it?!!!!

Great!

Cool photo.. and glad to see some sense prevailed in preservation..shamethey never did that all those years ago with Warspite or Duke of York... Greta shot Rob, and those Bikini's give it a quaint 70's feel!
