Description
Greetings Folks,
This I took while looking around The Maritime Museum, Liverpool..
This is HMS Ark Royal as seen from housing in Liverpool..
I think it sums Britain at its peak..
Its not trendy to mention Empire etc.. But have you noticed its fine for China and indeed the U.S to expand the 'influence' as the correct way of putting things is now.. Its not RIGHT to say create an Empire by stealth..
Here, in the U.K. its so ground into the drones you must ot be British and be proud they just don't.. They don't notice when this HUGE shipyard (Cammell Laird) closes..
This built most of the Royal Navy's ships, not to say Canadian, and many other nations including... Confederate States! Yep, that old!
They don't notice when anything happens.. All this place is shut now except a small refit area.. It used to be the only place Nuclear Subs were built (I don't know where they are now - abroad?)
I despise Governments that put their pockets first and not the Country.. And we have one. Over privileged rich gits, who should have been drowned at birth.. But the drones don't notice as long as they have their Mobile Phones!!
And don't get me started on the Aid Budget! Grrr!
Sorry for that..
Rant over, been a very Very long while and its all built up.. Its still building!

It is really great that we have the privilege of free speech and you mentioned China - you would be having someone knocking on your door in no time for saying this over there !!! Oh your shot?? Yes I like it Rob.

With you ALL THE WAY on this one! sadly my life has been spent watching the decline of this once great shipyard. I remember the fanfare of the opening of the biggest fully enclosed ship building hall in Europe and the news that 90% of the workforce were headed for the dole cue..Lairds ticks over upgrading and re-furbishing the Royal Navy's fleet of Auxilliaries....I suppose the bright spot SHOULD be the globally renowned apprenticeship schemes they run....however, as it attracts candidates from all around the world, once trained they're off abroad....where the real work is :-( Just for the record, the photo was taken from the top of Holt Hill, in Birkenhead. If it's dry tomorrow I may go up and get a photo of the view as it is now......

Hey Rob, don't hold back. We want to know what you really think (LOL). Yeah, I could say that the US is just as bad and worse in some ways but aren't most governments and countries pretty much the same today. Well, at least we have the right to speak up about it. Just keep on keepin' on!!!! Oh yeah, very cool photo.

Well, the British Empire is gone and will never come back. All the facilities in Britain were paid with the money from the colonies. This fate never touched other European countries because most of them never had colonies or not so many like Britain. It's a logical consequence that all these facilities will disappear with no necessity to build as many ships as before. Well, today Britain (UK) is on the same economical level like France, Germany or Italy and so it can not afford more than these countries and never the huge fleet of the past (for what?). The logical consequence is to degrade and/or close shipyards never needed. There are many other things Britain can do than building ships... On the continent you can see how old and traditional companies disappear. The are being bought by finance companies, dried out and closed. But this gives the chance to other companies to fill the gaps and new names appear on the market... Well, this is the new world... The picture is a nice historical document and very interesting to see how people lived then (in the 30ies?). They could see every ship on the slip. And I am sure they worked there. I am curious to see the situation today.

Love the old pic. One of the problems with manufacturing is when the finance guys take over a company. They only think of how money can be made and don't give a damn about the skills, ideas and creativity that keep a manufacturing company going. Happens on this side of the pond all the time. It's how Mitt Romney made his money.

Knew that was Liverpool as soon as I saw the cranes. Can't believe you've been up this end and didn't say hi :0(

Rob, your point is very well made this in this presentation. Trust me when I say that the U.S. is not far behind you in our attempt to dismantle what is left of our military.

This affliction seems to be more infectious then Ebola.. Here, too. All our manufacturing, and even most of our so-called "customer service" has been "outsourced" to whatever 3rd world craphole can come up with the lowest bid. It's a sad situation, and the blame lies mostly on the politicos that think no further than their pockets. But part of the blame (a large part) must go to a society that's more concerned about what a bunch of spoiled rotten, self-centered celebrity bitches are doing tonight, than where our country (or our planet) will be in the next 5 years... Sad,,, Great shot, Rob.

Sadly it's the way of the world these days mate. Many Governments have forgotten that they are there to serve the people.
