Description

The green iguana or common iguana is a large mostly plant eating species of lizard living in Mexico, Central and South America plus the Caribbean islands. They are very common throughout Puerto Rico and considered as a pest. In the United States feral populations exist in South Florida (including the Florida Keys), Hawaii, and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. It has adapted significantly because of their speed and ability to climb trees. It grows up to 4.9 feet (1.5 meters) in length from head to tail with bodyweights upward of 20 pounds (9.1 kg). We have been down in South Florida for about two and a half weeks and this was my first walk into the swamp. This Iguana was about 4 feet long (1.2 meters) and very aggressive. He had two elderly ladies cornered on the boardwalk. One had bright red sneakers! Iguanas have very sharp claws for climbing and I cropped this photo so you could checkout the claws. We got the ladies on their way and the Iguana folded his legs back to relax in the sun. I have not seen the blue color on his shoulders before and because the first four spines behind the blue area are damaged, the blue area may be damaged skin from a fight or mating ritual. Some info from Wikipedia. Best details in zoom.. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

His head would have been on the walkway if he were dead. He was in the sun to warm his body. Reptiles do not generate body warmth like humans they get their body warmth from the sun. The half open eye was watching me moving in for the photo!

Very attractive in a prehistoric way! Did you get a photo of the cornered ladies?

The two elder ladies may not take their morning walk in the swamp any more. I should have snapped off a photo as 'random women' but the boy scout in me was just trying to get the ladies out of a stressful situation.

He looks quite blissful in the warm sun; I can't imagine encountering a large reptile on a boardwalk, but then I haven't been in Florida. Wonderful capture and information!

They are not welcome in my yard (I live in S.W. Florida), they can trash a garden or flowerbed in no time!

Cool shot and interesting information Dana. At first I thought that blue part was a scarf or something like that. I have seen some similar sized ones in belize and oi wouldn't want to run into an aggressive one.

This is such an intriguing portrait, Dana! I'm really fascinating by all the fabulous textures and colors, which you captured so very well, and there is so much to discover by looking over all the details in zoom. A great photo, and info as well, my friend. Thank you very much for sharing this!
