Description

....let you climb on the ruins?, yes they do! Firstly, sorry! this didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped...Aunty Rendos file restrictions meant reducing this to 20% size and still dropping 11% of the pixels which given it was taken on a little Cannon pocket camera was not good.....Hopefully I can fill in some of the details. The top image is looking East over the city of Bodrum. In the middle you can just make out the waters of Bodrum harbour. Just to the left of centre you may make out a forest of masts from the beautiful local boats called Gullets. The dark area behind the masts is Bodrum Castle, this Crusader stronghold was built on the foundations of the castle Zephyrion which I mentioned yesterday. In the foreground, remains of the city walls lead us away to the West. I had to stop here as the tower got in the way, the elevated houses on the right edge of the picture drop down to join the lower image at it's left edge. We are now looking West over Gumbet, 30 years ago this was a sleepy fishing village, what you see is 90% the result of tourism. In the foreground rows of stone blocks, cleaned and numbered and awaiting the next phase of restoration. The trees in the lower left hide more gems, a Roman Necropolis ( cemetery ) 17 tombs of various designs and sizes from the simple to the ornate. Typical in Turkey, the Necropolis sits astride a boundary, one half in the Myndos ancient site, the other half in the grounds of a Hotel. There is no physical boundary and the hotel is happy for you to wander around their grounds looking at the tombs, though you get some strange looks from the guests relaxing around the pool. In the left quarter distance you can just see the beautiful blue waters of Gumbet bay, where I spent so much time, suffering cold beer while turning a pleasing shade of brown, oh how I suffer to bring you these little travelogues.... :-) Right! who likes mosaics?....

Fantastic views! Thanks for posting them. I still can't believe they let you crawl on the ruins. I'm glad they did because the photos are awesome. Sorry you had to suffer so many indignities while on vacation. Imagine, COLD beer and so much sunshine all at once. Next time take me with you and I'll walk behind you with an umbrella to shade you and sit all the beer on a ledge to warm up before handing them to you.

GT - this is heresy I know, climbing all over those precious pieces of history = not good! However, great to read a little more and find out some interesting facts about Turkey! Also GT - Heresy concerning the beer - I DO hope your joking ?!?

Beautiful panorama job despite the tower being in the way. Interesting to see what it looks like today, and trying to imagine what it can have looked like back then. And great job with our history lessons. We're learning a good bit about places we've never been to. Keep up the good work! :-)
