Description

The narrow gauge rail line that connects Cusco with Aguas Calientes is used by several privately operates railroad companies. PERURAIL operates the Vistadome trains, and PERURAIL passenger service ends at Aguas Calientes. In this picture, the channelized Aguas Calientes River (in the foreground) merges with the Urubamba River right behind the the rail line. The gradient of the rail line matches the gradient of the Urubamba River. In January 2010 the Cusco Region received unusually heavy rains for two weeks, including 35 inches in 5 days, which did much damage to the cities historic buildings and the flooding of the Urubamba River devastated the Sacred Inca Valley. The rivers floods destroyed over 9,000 ha (~20,000 acres) of crops, washed out the road between Pisac and Ollantaytambo, destroyed over 2,000 homes and left more than 28,000 homeless. It also destroyed bridges and washed out part of the railroad tracks between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes. More than 4,000 people, mostly tourists, were stranded in Aguas Calientes and had to be rescued with Army helicopters. Both the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu were closed indefinitely In August of this year one could still see the effort of reconstructing homes in the Valley. This picture was taken on 27 August 2014, Sig...

I get it; this is real. However, it still looks like a fantastic model railway with all the clutter in one small area.
