Description
This guy swims by just out of curiosity to see who's taking its picture this time. Anything to break up the boredom of perpetually swimming around in circles.
Captured 8/3/11, at the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific, in beautiful Long Beach, California, on my third visit that year.
The bonnethead shark or shovelhead, Sphyrna tiburo, is a member of the hammerhead shark genus Sphyrna, and part of the family Sphyrnidae. The Greek word sphyrna translates as hammer, referring to the shape of this shark's head - tiburo is the Taino word for shark.
Characterized by a broad, smooth, spade-like head, they have the smallest cephalofoil (hammerhead) of all Sphyrna. Grey-brown above and lighter on the underside, it is a timid and harmless shark.

Hence, this is not what is considered the iconic hammerhead, which has more of a rectangular, rippled and wide cephalofoil.
Arrivederci.
