Description
Captured 8/3/11, at one of the beautiful big tank exhibits in the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific, in beautiful Long Beach, California, on my third visit that year.

Gorgonacea is an order of sessile colonial cnidarian found throughout the oceans of the world, especially in the tropics and subtropics. Gorgonians are also known as sea whips or sea fans and are similar to the sea pen, a soft coral. Gorgonians are closely related to coral. Individual tiny polyps form colonies that are normally erect, flattened, branching, and reminiscent of a fan. Others may be whiplike, bushy, or even encrusting. A colony can be several feet high and across but only a few inches thick. They may be brightly coloured, often purple, red, or yellow. Photosynthetic gorgonians can be successfully kept in captive reef aquariums. The name "Gorgonacea" is no longer considered valid and Alcyonacea is now the accepted name for the order.

I'm not sure if that's brain coral down at the lower left.

Lovely as all coral is.. Very difficult to get a good shot, tanks being what they are.. (I have the same trouble). Rob

(Is that really the name? Gorgonacea? I wonder if they're related to Gorgonzola...probably not.) A most unusual shot, forged in part, I presume, from the difficult spaces of aquariums. But your eye's at work. It's almost an abstract, because of the close-to-the-glass angle. ANd the green "frame" around the glass gives such an oblique and fascinating touch to the shot. But because of your angle, everything in the tank looks "flat" all of a sudden, like it's an art installation. Beautiful blues back there, with turquoises and dark blues. And the fish and corals make counterpoint to the big fan in front. It's almost like a sculpture. Such a fascinating shot of this sight, very unusual and suggestive. And you mentioned brain coral---I don't know what that is, but that pink thing sure looks like it. In a way, this makes a good companion to the last shot I commented on---the dude with the tattoos from hell on his head---because they're both of wholly "other" creatures. Really fascinating pov, and fine underwater lighting. A fine addition to your aquarium shots.
