Description

This is my neighborhood last week. The scene had the deep rich colors and warmth that we see here in late fall. I wanted to take a photo that captured some of Bill's essence. I pampered it a bit too (a little fairy-tale dust)...I hope I succeeded. Point blank, Bill's one of the kindest people I know. I've never met him, but everyone I know who has, says he's just that: a genuine kind, heartful person. They say it with surprise, too---not about him, but that someone could actually be that way---without pretense, without ceremony, without anything. All my communications with him have borne that out. He even lent me his DSLR, so I could learn how it works; and he did it without a second-thought. That's Bill...In fact, this street was one of the first things I shot with his camera. And now, a few years later, I give its blessed view as an offering to him (with all my technical flaws). I hope I caught some of his essence. His photography and writing feel just like him (bmac62): gentle, loving, and very finely tuned. He turns things into 'fine wine'---fine cognac may be the better word, because it's made of several brandies, aged until all their tastes open up one after the next, like a string of gentle revelations. Bill, this street accompanies me every day, whether in snow or heat, with full trees or naked trees or trees decked out in splendid hues. And it's always beautiful. Let this stand as my 'portrait' for you, and as my thanks for all you've done for everyone you've cared about, and all you give each day. Much joy, love and happiness to you, you're a jewel, and it's a pleasure to call you my friend. Happy Birthday Bill, and many, many more to come!
Mark (Please see Full: It's very large!!!) (Also, I've returned to commenting, and will continue over the next few weeks...)

Mark, this dedication to your friend was so well done and one he will most certainly enjoy. You're thoughtful words about the kind of man he is were inspiring and clearly came from the heart. As for you're selection of this scene from your neighborhood, it couldn't have been better and is filled with so many sights that catch the eye. This colorful setting is the perfect compliment to your words and sure to leave everyone who views it with a tranquil feeling.

Always great to see a new posting from you, Mark - they've been too rare lately. Ordinarily, I might say that this is over saturated (something I've been criticized for as well), but you seem to have the ability to push the saturation level beyond where it should go & still pull it off. I think it's because you don't use it in a gimmicky way - your photos have a holistic, spontaneous quality - it feels like this is the way you really see things - with great intensity. As for Bill, I have had the pleasure of meeting him & I completely agree with everything you said about his kindness & gentleness & about his finely honed, carefully crafted photography.

A fully rich tonal range in this lovely balanced composition, Mark; very pleasing proportions, and it gives the feeling of being about to go into overdrive and bloom all around the edges and into the unknown...fairy tale dust indeed! It's magical, and used exactly right. A beautiful dedication for Bill, and I also feel it's been too long since you last posted. Welcome back!

Such a lovely B-day dedi for Bill. You do have a garden of jewel-like colors reflecting the season on your street and especially delightful that it is a colorful and relaxing avenue of nature in the middle of the city. I can see why you enjoy strolling along this blossoming path, camera in hand. It is always so interesting how everything changes so much with each season, giving us a new view and a new perspective. Really beautiful editing with just the right amount of fairy dust. :o)

Wow Mark! You are a magician with camera, post work and words. Gorgeous shades of greens, golds and reds. There is such depth to this photo...I feel like I could step into it and walk right on down the block:) I appreciate your kind comments immensely. Who knows,...TK and I will certainly get back to Chicago sooner or later...there is a meetup in our future for sure.

OHH! I SOO. love that shot and dedi. Love the rich colors and I love the sideway gardens and their black iron fences and you captured all to perfection. Another wonder from your hands. Well worth enjoying in full size :-) I dont know what does it, but we dont get such lovely colors on our trees, or only on very few of them. Maybe it has something to do with our autumn, which is not always very cold. Dont know.

Even as an agnostic, I have to say, or, rather shout, OMG, WHAT A PHOTO!, replete with an extraordinary verdant ambiance of clarity and depth, plus a torrent of various colors and textures, far too many for the human eye to absorb at one sitting - perhaps an eagle, known for its razor sharp vision, could absorb it at one sitting, or flight. But I digress. You have broken the bonds of the mediocre with this image, my friend. When it comes to detail, definition and the nitty gritty, an electron microscope couldn't have done better. And it must be viewed at its largest to be fully appreciated. A superb, and well deserved, birthday dedication for our Vietnam veteran, Mark.

Wow. Wow! Full view is glorious! The colors are perfect. I love that "over" saturated look. In your hands it's natural, as Claude said. One of my favorite things about Chicago is all the iron work and the sidewalk gardens. This is superb!
