Description
In 1888, John Wesley Wolfe came west because of health problems related to a Civil War injury. He left his wife and three of his children in Etna, Ohio. His oldest son, Fred, came with him as he looked for a place to settle.
Wolfe settled at Arches and raised cattle there, eventually grazing more than a thousand head on the native grass which was plentiful at the time. There was a creek nearby that provided enough water for the cattle and a small garden.
In 1906 Wolfe’s daughter, Flora, her husband, Ed Stanley, and their two children came from Ohio to live with him. Disappointed in the “ranch”, Flora convinced her father to build a new cabin with a wooden floor. The luxurious residence you see below is that cabin. In 1910 Wolfe sold the ranch and the family moved back to Ohio. John Wolfe died in 1913 at the age of 84. By the 1970s the Wolfe Ranch had been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and incorporated into Arches National Park.

Astonishing that all this was done because he had health problems. All that moving and stress would be enough to cause most people illness!

It looks like it will stand another hundred years! I'm glad you decided to post this. It's got a rugged beauty to it, and full view is almost a tactile experience.

Somehow I love this warped cabin. For that time, comfortable..... today, hard to imagine to living and live with a 5-member family here.
