Description

The Old Town Music Hall's Mighty Wurlitzer is like the fun uncle of the music world. Instead of keeping the mechanics of the organ enclosed like some theaters do, Field uses glow-in-the-dark paint and black lights to show off its insides, which include 2600 pipes that range in size from pencil sized to 16 feet. The Wurlitzer doesn't just play music. Mallets on stage dance, hitting chimes and drums of all sizes. Literally, it's got all the bells and whistles. It does everything from thunder sounds, to gongs, to rain, all controlled from the seat of the organist. John Reed-Torres will become the theater’s organist when Bill is no longer able. Here you can see Bill Field doing what he loves best. I guess you could describe the entire enterprise as a labor of love, something that seems to be in short supply today.

Just makes me wonder that if he needs a buggy to get around, how does he manage all those foot pedals??? It must be good exercise for him and I would love to hear the sounds.

Incredible! Yes, is a labor of love, and the instrument was made with love and pride too. Is a shame, but I know some people that think it can be replaced with a technologic gizmo.
