Description
Aaron, Margarite and Bob are Diné which is what the Navajo prefer to be called. Diné translates as "The People". Aaron was born and raised in the area so Monument Valley was his playground as a child. This would prove to be very lucky for me. There are several tour companies in the area. Most offer two and one-half hour trips into the valley. But you must be back in that time since there are others waiting to go on their tours when you get back. Since Aaron was his own boss he could make his own rules. He also offered two and one-half hour trips into the valley but when I went it was just the two of us and we were gone for five hours.
This is the Octagon House built by Aaron and his family. It is in the shape of a traditional Diné hogan. Inside are personal items from the family. The pottery was made by his father. The baskets were woven by his mother and the paintings were done by his uncle. I stayed in the Octagon House for several days before moving into one of the tipis.
My first day there, my laptop died. So, with no internet or TV or radio I was forced to do the unthinkable, read.
Proving once again that appearances are deceiving, the beautiful Native American bedspreads are from China and made of polyester.

A house with no corners! Interesting about the bedspreads, polyester is a nasty fire risk.

You have posted so many wonderful pix from this Journey, I don't quite know, where to start to comment - but they are all so educational and have been devoured with real interest by me. I just love this type of natural or organic looking abode, fabulous Mark, this is worth a trip to the desert ... ... and not to forget, accompanied as always, by your cool sense of humour, which makes travelling alongside so much more fun, thanks for sharing all these memories here with us ...
