Description
Diné (Navajo) society is a pure democracy, one person, one vote. Tribal chiefs and council members must stand for election every four years. All reservation land is held in common. Decades ago outsiders proposed developing the area with resorts and condominiums. The Diné voted to reject these proposals. Their heritage was not for sale.
If a member wants to build a house or business they can lease up to one acre of land. Aaron and his family live on an acre of tribal land and Tipi Village is literally in his backyard. If the business is successful he and his partner Bob have plans to expand and will be petitioning the tribe for the lease of another acre of land.
This is the view from Aaron's backyard. Imagine waking up to this every morning. By the way, that fellow way over on the right is known as Big Chief.
