Very similar to our Greater Spotted Woodpecker, but don't hold your breath waiting for a photo of this quality from me!

Top Class! It has a great pose typical of woodpeckers. As a lifelong UK birdwatcher it is always interesting to see new species from different countries. When they are as good as this even better! Well done!

Fantastic capture! This time the bird has a sleepy expression. Maybe he is not an Early bird! :)

Terrific pastiche of the reddish woodpecker and its milieu in this cool capture.

lol Andrea: Nor me. It's not just the composition, but the complexity of lights and darks, the highly complex criss crosses and contrasts, the lichens (or whatever they are---my ignorance, sorry), the deep white light on top, and a 'grain'---too strong a word, but you have a slight grainy feel to it that intensifies and gives an atomized energy to your shot. It's a beautiful bird capture, Claude, and the deep yellow/burnt brown tones make it feel almost done on wood. Beautiful shot, beautiful work on the shot.

I'm no good at bird shots either. Bill is ... his early gallery is full of 'em ... but I'm never in the right place, or close enough, or patient enough, or something. All I can do is sit back and admire this in amazement!

A great shot of this woodpecker and you are getting another nasty look!
