Description
I had posted the shot of Merlin, the great horned chick that had fallen out of the nest. After a lot of effort, he was raised by his parents. This little fuzz ball is a barred owl. He is only about 6 days old here. He too, had fallen out of his nest. The only good part here is that this nest is on my property. I fixed him a basket like I did for Merlin. He stayed there for the next 3 weeks or so until he was up to what we call a brancher, meaning that he leaves the nest and hops around in the tree until he learns to fly. This is a shot I took when I was attempting to get him to stay in the basket. If he heard me, he would climb out and yell, attempting to get me to feed him. After a few days, he stayed put and his parents finished raising him. Take note of the talons. As an adult, those, along with 800+ pounds of crushing pressure are what an owl hunts with. If you ever find an owl, be VERY AFRAID of the feet. I have seen people with multiple crushed bones in a hand because they thought the beak was the threat.

Wonderful capture if this cute guy! He looks so cute and innocent. And I take your warning to heart, as I do know that those talons would hurt me if I were stupid enough to try to get one my hand or wrist. But some people....

Thanks for the beautiful photo of this little fellow. Is it normal that it's difficult to get the parents to raise a little one once it's fallen out of the nest? Or is it rather due to human intervention? As I understand it, they don't have much sense of smell, so smelling human on the chick wouldn't be the problem. As for those talons - a bald eagle exerts about 750 pounds talon pressure. I'm not surprised the owl has a similar strength. Heavy, struggling prey gets its final treatment before being eaten. What does this type of owl eat? I recall Wesley the Owl only ate mice. So I assume there may be diet specialization with this little fellow, too. I just got a book - A Street Cat Named Bob - from a colleague and started reading it last night. Interesting to read about cat intelligence and behaviour. And interesting to compare intelligence between different animals. You must have a lot of experience with this. Will return about this as I continue reading. Keep up the good work! :-)
