Description

I remember being surprised when I first saw one of these on the tree just outside my living room, walking head first down the trunk. They are known to be acrobatic, almost gravity-defying & because of that they can access parts of tree branches that other birds can't reach. They're common visitors to our bird feeder, though they have to wait for the larger & more aggressive bluejays & woodpeckers to take their turns. They move pretty fast & don't stay in one place very long though, so I haven't had much luck photographing them until I got this one a few days ago... Please zoom.

What a cutie! Ours have quite a bit of blue on them, and they are bullies at the feeders

A beautiful capture, I love DOF and Light! It seems to be relative with our "Guacalchías"

Before I get to this beautiful image, I gotta say, what if animals named US the way we name them (ie, White-breasted Nuthatch)? So instead of being "Claude," you're "One-Headed Car Driver," or "Ten-Fingered Curry Hater". (In my case, "bald" would figure prominently.) Anyway, you got real lushness in the bird's underbelly---it almost looks like cashmere---and all the lines of its resting feathers too. And I love this pose. I'm sure you didn't have tons of time to get this, given how active the bird is; but you still got a fine composition/crop, with the bird attached to the tree yet looking out to the rest of the shot, regally...and in front of a beautiful bokeh'd background, in reds, browns and greens. A really fine shot, Claude. Kudos on getting a regal shot with such a difficult-to-pin-down bird. (When birds don't stand still, I want to offer them a 3-year contract, a free meal at a fine restaurant, a year's subscription to The New Yorker---whatever. I want to plead with them. Even when I've offered them food---which they take---they don't pose. I've considered sending out bills, but they'd probably chew them up. And I'm resisting the pun on "bills"...)

We have the red-breasted nuthatches living in our trees here. They are incredibly quick, and quite noisy too, when there's someone else at the feeder and they want to eat. It's a constant flurry of activity back and forth from feeder to trees. You managed a wonderful moment with this guy, excellent shot!

Wow ... you couldn't have gotten a better pose if you'd paid him! Oh wait ... bird feeder, you said? I guess you DID pay him! :)
