Description
I first noticed this nest, on the tree right outside my living room window, when it was about a quarter of this size. Though there are birds constantly flying around that tree (it's right next to our bird feeder) & I'm often looking out at them, I never saw a bird approach the nest. Over the course of a few days, I saw the nest get bigger & I was worried about it, because it wasn't the best spot for a nest - it was positioned precariously right at the end of a long thin branch & it looked like a strong wind could knock it down easily. And, sure enough, we had some wind & rain one night & the next day it was gone. I checked the ground under it, but there was no sign of it - it must have blown far away. I never saw any eggs or young birds in it, so I'm hoping that all that was lost was the structure itself & that whoever built it would find a better place to build the next one...

Whatever bird built it would have learned a valuable lesson! Nice pic.

fantastic shot and well seen... could it be an insect-nest ?

it looks like a hammock, and I'm continually amazed at how well birds build these things---they really make them strong, and out of so many "spare parts" that they pick up all around them...Unfortunately, as you point out, they don't always realize how precarious some of their locations are. I'd think that their feet would tell them each time they stepped on this thing (ie, that it was swaying a bit too much), but I'm no expert...Anyway, the way you caught it, it seems like a big satchel, made of twigs, leaves, soil, suspended from some sticks in mid air; and hanging there with real weight. It looks heavy. Really bright background, making the nest look even brighter. And lots of good detail in the nest itself. A very respectful shot, I mean that's how it feels to me: It shows the dense nature of these nests, and how hard birds have to work to build them. (With no hands---only with beaks. I mean, try making a cabinet that way...) A big sack upload; it's very nice.

Such intricacy! it is so beautiful, a shame that all that energy was wasted. Did you know what sort of bird it was?

No, lots of different types of birds in this tree, but I never saw one in or near the nest.

Interesting that they would build it there Great capture

Very nice capture.

Still it's so clever considering that the creature that built it didn't have any hands!

Capital capture of the doomed nest, which resembles a hive if it had twigs.

What a wonderful structure! I would love to see something like this being built.

What a wonderful shot of this nest! It's a marvelous structure, what a shame that it blew down...maybe they'll rebuild!
